What's the next step?

April 14, 2013

Consider this...

You need to get a job done and you don't know how to go about it. You look dumb and foolish and you hesitate to ask questions. You somehow locate a person who can give you information on how to complete the task. He gives you information in accordance to your questions. Your questions remain limited to the completion of the small piece of task that you are aiming for the time being.

However the complete task has more steps... which you are not aware of and only when the 1st piece of task is over, you get to know that and somehow you are led to the same person once again. He now tells you the full information.

As a result of this a lot of time and energy is wasted. Now what's the remedy? I thought about it and this is what I came up with:

Whenever you approach a person or a help-desk to know the steps to accomplish something, always ensure you ask the complete information. Don't remain limited to that small piece of task.

Always ask this- OK after I have completed that piece of task, what to do next? And then what to do next? Always know the next step... because the next step is very important.

If you ask too many questions and look dumb... that's okay. But if you miss on an important assignment just because you didn't ask those questions - it can turn out to be very expensive.

Bottom line is not to relax. Not to feel satisfied that okay now the task is complete! It is important to mentally visualize the whole process and ask in one's own mind - What's the next step?
